Uniformed public services students at City College Norwich were given a lesson with a difference on Friday, when lecturer Alan Rampling taught their class dressed as Papa Smurf.
The fun blue and white outfit was worn by Mr Rampling to raise money for the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA), days after he and his daughter Zoe completed the Great North Run in smurf costumes.
The pair have raised over £1,000 for RAFA through their smurf-inspired fundraising efforts. As well as collecting sponsorship for the half-marathon run, the duo have raised money through car boot sales and by holding a bric-a-brac sale at the college.
Mr Rampling, 49, from Horstead, who is the course leader for the foundation degree in public services, also pledged to wear his smurf outfit whilst teaching the group who donated the most sponsorship. The winning group was the Uniformed Public Services year 2 group D students.
The Royal Air Forces Association is a charity which is close to Mr Rampling’s heart as he spent 27 years in the RAF, including 11 years at RAF Coltishall. Zoe Rampling has followed in her father’s footsteps and is currently working as a senior aircraftwoman at RAF Lichfield.
City College Norwich lecturer Alan Rampling said, “It has been great to be able to raise money for RAFA, as the charity does so much to help current and retired RAF personnel and their dependents. We’ve had great support from the uniformed public services students at the college and from members of staff.”
“The Great North Run was brilliant” he added. “We stopped a few times along the way so that people could take photos of us.”
