Ego: Students Create Name and Brand for New Shop

City College Norwich’s exciting new Retail Skills Academy shop will be called Ego, after student Cameron Button won the Norwich Evening News competition to come up with its name – and now a group of graphic design students are working to create the shop’s logo and brand identity.

Business student Cameron, 17, from Saxlingham Thorpe, suggested the name Ego as this reflects the shop’s appeal to fashion-conscious men and women.  The customer’s ego will be enhanced by buying top quality affordable clothing, in the knowledge that they will also be supporting the Academy’s students and the good causes to which profits will be donated.

Cameron said: “I thought about what the shop is trying to do and what it is selling.  I thought, what is going to attract a general high street shopper looking for designer clothes?  The name Ego sticks out in your mind.  Not everyone thinks about buying second-hand, but Ego is almost challenging the customer to come into the shop and to get over their own ego”.

For his winning suggestion, Cameron will receive £200 worth of Bennetts vouchers and will be invited to attend the shop’s opening to see the Ego name being unveiled.

The College is now running a competition for its graphic design students to come up with designs for the branding of Ego.  The winning student will work with Norwich-based creative design company Farrows in producing the final designs that will appear on Ego’s shop front and in its marketing.  Farrows have generously donated their creative minds and time free of charge.

Sue Dougal, Head of the Retail Skills Academy said: “Ego is a great name for the shop.  We can’t wait to see Cameron’s winning suggestion up on the shop front.  We have lots of really creative minds at the college and it was a natural choice to ask our graphic design students to come up with a logo and image for Ego.  We are extremely grateful to Farrows for their support, which will not only help the shop but will provide fantastic work experience for the winning student”.

Julia Groves, Course Leader National Diploma Graphic Design, said: "We think the Ego project is a brilliant opportunity for our 2nd year Graphic Design students to work on a live brief. It gives them the chance to work to a tight deadline, liaising with both clients and professional designers".

Ego will open in Chapelfield soon. The innovative new retail outlet, backed by the College, leading local retailers and the National Skills Academy for Retail, will sell designer and quality clothing and fashion accessories for men and women.  Uniquely, members of the public will be able to sell their unwanted fashion items through Ego, as well as buying quality “investment” fashion items that have been sold-on by others.

Ego will help to develop retail skills and knowledge for existing and aspiring retailers.  Students and others developing their skills through the Academy will staff the shop, learning about all of the key elements of retailing in a real trading environment with real customers.  Next to Ego will be a dedicated Retail Skills Academy advice centre, offering existing and aspiring retailers access to a wide range of training opportunities and business services.

The Retail Skills Academy courses will cover all areas of retail, not just fashion, and will be open to anyone from small independent stores to large chains to individuals wanting to get into retailing for the first time.  The Academy is proud to be running the Mary Portas Master Classes, developed by the star of the popular BBC series Mary Queen of Shops.
