Access to Creative Writing student Aaron Curran has written a modern adaptation of the Nativity story, which is set to be performed this weekend.
‘It’s the Nativity, Init’ is the 19 year old student’s re-telling of the traditional Christmas story. Aaron took the Nativity, set 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem, and has re-told the story in the setting of modern day Britain, adding in light hearted references to contemporary culture and society.
Rather than travelling on a donkey, Mary and Joseph are driving to hospital, but find themselves stuck in traffic as people flock to see what they believe is a UFO, but which in fact is the star symbolising the birth of Jesus. The play presents Mary as “a bit of a chav”, and Joseph as a “hard nut”.
Aaron said: "'It's the Nativity, Innit' is a play that updates the Nativity story into modern times through the thoughts of two narrators. As the narrators sit down and imagine what the Nativity would look like in 2010, the scene they imagine then starts to unfold before their eyes.
“The play explores the modernisation of Mary and Joseph, the three kings and wise men and also the birth of Jesus. Although underpinned with a serious storyline element, the majority of the play is in comedic form."
Aaron, who is currently studying on City College Norwich’s Access to Creative Writing course, plans to progress on to higher education and to study journalism, and would like to make a career as a writer.
‘It’s the Nativity innit’ will be performed at the City Church, Norwich Christmas service at 10am on Sunday, December 19, at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Norwich. All are welcome to attend.
