Creative Arts students at City College Norwich have created their biggest installation yet, transforming their workshops, studios and classrooms into a major exhibition space. The End of Year Show, featuring everything from textiles to graphics, painting to sculpture, and photography to multi-media installations, is one of the highlights of the college calendar.
The gallery of 20 rooms in the School of Creative Arts block will exhibit the work of more than 300 graduating students. Each year the show attracts hundreds of visitors to view the students’ work. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy the work on display.
Jo Pretty, Head of the School of Creative Arts said: “We have an exceptional show, packed with work that is high on originality and quality from right across the School. This is an exciting time for all the graduating students. It is their opportunity to display to the public their creative ideas, wit, curiosity, and skills learnt whilst on their courses. Whether you are supporting an artist, thinking of enrolling next year, or are just curious, it's a huge community treat – come along.”
Among the work on display is a piece by Access to Art and Design student Anne Davies, 62, which features around 600 hand-painted butterflies. Inspired by the 3,000 mile journey undertaken by the Monarch butterfly which migrates from the United States to Mexico, the piece reflects Anne’s own creative and life journey which has seen her travel extensively, including working as a nurse in the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corp for 4 years.
Anne has secured a place at NUCA to do a degree in Illustration. Anne said: “I didn’t know I could ever illustrate and I am thrilled to have the chance to do something new at the age of 62. The Access course has been excellent and the tutors have been phenomenal. They are supportive, encouraging and helpful and have guided me through the experience”.
The End of Year Show celebrates student success and the Private View will include award presentations for painting/drawing, graphics/photography, sculpture/installation, textiles/fashion, and creative writing. The awards will be presented by colleagues working in the creative industries and have been generously sponsored by City & Guilds, the UK’s leading awarding body which offers more than 500 qualifications across 28 industry sectors.
The End of Year Show will be open daily to the public on weekdays from Tuesday 29th June to Wednesday 7th July (10am - 4.30pm) and on Saturday 3rd July (10am - 4pm). Admission is free.
