College governors

The Corporation of the college is an independent legal body which comprises twenty members who are drawn mainly from business and the local community along with representatives of staff and students at the college as well as the Principal.

The College Governors serve in a voluntary capacity for initially a period of four years although often go on to be involved with the college over a much longer period.

The full Corporation meets six times a year but much important work is carried out by the committees which comprise of up to five members. The committees are:

  • FINANCE & RESOURCE
  • STAFFING
  • ESTATES
  • AUDIT
  • REMUNERATION
  • SEARCH
  • STUDENT AFFAIRS

The role of the Corporation is to set the general direction and framework within which the college operates and is not directly involved in the day-to-day management. It has five principal responsibilities:

  • to determine the educational mission and character of the college
  • to be satisfied as to the effective and efficient use of resources
  • to approve the annual budget
  • the senior staff appointments (Principal, and Deputy Principals)
  • the framework for pay and conditions of service for all other staff

Bryony Falkus (Chairman)

Bryony is a retired partner of Mills & Reeve (Solicitors) and joined the Corporation in October 1995. She is currently Chair of the Corporation as well as a number of other Corporation committees.

Bryony has served for a number of years as Vice-Chairman and in May 2004 and following the retirement of the serving Chairman she was elected to this office.

Sandy Sankar (Vice Chairman)

Sandy joined the Board in May 2004. He has spent his career in health work, initially in nursing and then moving onto nursing education and management. He has held a number of senior appointments and currently works on a freelance basis. He is a Non Executive Director of the Southern Norfolk Primary Care NHS Trust and a JP.

His health work skills and connections will be a valuable asset to the Board as the College increases its links with both the medical School at UEA and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

In March 2007 Sandy was elected as the Vice Chairman of the Corporation.

Dick Palmer

Dick is the Principal of City College and took up his appointment on the 1st January 2003. Previously he was Deputy Principal at Lewisham College, London. He cares passionately about Further Education and its development and will be working to enhance all of the services provided by City College, Norwich and ensuring it is amongst the leading colleges of Further and Higher education in the UK.

Dick is a committed family man with two young daughters and a son. He sits as a member of the Curriculum & Quality, Finance, Search and Staffing committees.

Barbara Abrahams

I am a Programme Manager in the Hotel School and over the last 20 years I have been a Sessional lecturer, a proportional lecturer and Senior Tutor with responsibility for staff mentoring.

My teaching experience relates to a spectrum of abilities and ages. My particular interest is the design and delivery of accredited programmes for students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

I am pleased to have the opportunity to represent the views of my colleagues.

David Adler

A former partner in KPMG, apart from his accountancy work, David was very involved in careers advisory and training work. He still has a number of business commitments and is also very active in the voluntary sector.

Amongst many interests, he is Chairman of the Whitlingham Charitable Trust which manages Whitlingham Country Park. He is currently Chairman of the Corporation Finance & Resources committee.

Matthew Colmer

As Associate Director of Finance for Norfolk Community Health and Care, I am able to bring my experience of finance, strategy development and governance from the NHS to support the college achieve its objectives

Daniel Cox

In my role as Leader of Norfolk County Council and Chairman of the County Strategic Partnership, it has been recognised by all the key partners and stakeholders across the County, that improving the skills of young people is critical to the success of reducing deprivation and inequalities and providing a sound foundation for a strong and sustainable local economy.

Nationally, we are in a period of transformation for the delivery of learning and skills and I am pleased to be able to work with the College as it moves to implement these.

Alassana Dumbia

In my role as a Governor I hope to be able to support all students at the College with a particular emphasis on those taking Higher Education courses. Outside the College I am particularly interested in assisting with the work of various charities.

Carol Edwards

I am a Registered Nurse, a qualified tutor , Nurse Tutor and Senior Manager. I have been involved in both Health Care and Education for many years, within Norfolk and in other parts of the British Isles.

My present employment role is Deputy Director of Nursing and Education at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

I bring to the College a passion for quality education and training and equal access for all. As an employer I will strive to ensure that formal training and education matches competency and job needs of employment and employability of the students.

Susan Flint

Reception Administrator at City College Norwich

"I enjoy being part of City College and I care about students, staff and the future of the College. As a Governor I hope to be able to share my aspirations and concerns in order to influence changes as well as acting as a voice for others."

Ian Fox

My current role is the Managing Director of a  Norwich based Property and Development Company. I am RICS qualified and have  over 20 years experience in the property industry. I believe this will enable me to assist the college in various areas such as property management and budgeting. In particular I hope my expertise will be beneficial in assisting the College to maximise the use and value of its buildings and advise on future development projects.

Barbara Hacker

Barbara was until recently a Norfolk County Councillor and is a former Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group. She has varied interests including active involvement in the arts via the Norfolk Arts Steering group and Local Government Arts Forum executive. Currently she chairs the Estates committee and is a member of the Finance & Resources committee.

Ian Learmonth

As a senior police officer I deal with incidents involving the local community and am grateful for the opportunity to be involved with the College and really understand the challenge and needs of the younger students.

Dr Adam Longcroft

I look forward to serving as a Governor at City College. My experience and expertise in aspects of Higher Education, Quality Assurance, Pedagogy, Programme Design and Evaluation will hopefully allow me to contribute to the continuing good work of the College. My experience of working with a wide range of colleges and Higher and Further Education colleagues will give me a chance to assist in developing the innovative programmes of City College.

Shane Mann

I am currently President of the Student Union at the College and therefore welcome the opportunity of representing our members on the Corporation Board.

Valerie Markham

My role as a Governor continues the link between Financial Institutions in Norwich and the College. In my role as HR Director for Aviva I hope to be able to use my skills and experience in Human Resource work for the benefit of the College as well as helping shape its future development.

Chris Maw

Chris, a Chartered Accountant, is the leader of the assurance practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in Norwich, having previously worked in London for some years. In this role, he provides professional services to many of the region's biggest companies and employers as well as undertaking a recruitment and career counselling role for his firm. He is active in the business life of the city and county, participating in, amongst other things, the Forum Trust, the Economic Round Table and the Shaping the Future initiative.

Chris is pleased to have been asked to join the Board as he is keenly interested in the importance of good training, both in terms of developing the individual and supporting the continued growth of the local economy.

Elliot Page

I have become a governor in order to learn from my role, as well as to be in a position to give back to the student body some of the things I have gained from it. I campaign on local and national levels for youth and students in and out of the College. To give people the voice they require is, I believe, inspiring.

Melvyn Roffe

In my role as Principal of Wymondham College I hope my experience of working in secondary education will assist the College, particularly in its partnership work with different schools.

Zak Virgin

Zak is an associate at law firm Mills & Reeve in Norwich specialising in corporate and banking law and is also involved in the recruitment and training of solicitors at the firm. He was born and educated in Norfolk and is committed to using his legal knowledge to help the College develop and implement its business and educational goals. He is keen to see the College continue to provide high quality learning opportunities and become increasingly recognised as a centre of educational excellence for the benefit of both the region's learners and its employers. He sits on the Finance and Resources committee.
