These courses replace Single and Double GCSE Science. You can take just Science (one GCSE) or Science and Additional Science (two GCSEs). Both are split equally between Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Topics include Genes, Environment, Designer Products, Making Changes, You’re in Charge, Space and its Mysteries, Power of the Atom, Synthesis, Energy Flow and Inside Living Cells.
As well as the science content of these topics, you will also think about ‘what science is’ and ‘how science is done’.The topics in the new syllabus are all chosen to give students an understanding of science in the world around them, so it always seems relevant and something to do with your lives.
It is suitable for those with a general curiosity about ‘how things work’, and for students who would like to study mainly humanities like geography or sociology, but wish to keep up some interest in science. If you want to study more science or carry on with science after GCSEs, then you should take Science and Additional Science.
There is a lot of practical work, so you will need to enjoy doing experiments on your own and in small groups. You need to be ready to write, calculate, think and join in discussions.
