Performing Arts (Dance) BTEC National Extended Diploma

Summary: 

This course is for people who are passionate about dance.  The course is mainly practical where you learn through daily classes, professional workshops and performances.  You will also be required to attend theory based classes which develop your knowledge and understanding of the dance industry. 

The course aims to provide suitable training and education for progression to get you to University or Vocational dance school or into employment.

The BTEC National Extended Diploma is a nationally recognised qualification which is the equivalent to three A Levels.

Entry Requirements: 

Either a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma in a related subject, or at least four GCSEs in Grades A-C and practical ability.  All applicants will be invited to attend an audition where you will be asked to partake in a practical class and perform a solo.

Core Skills: 

The  core units are Performance Workshop, Performing Arts Business, The Historical Context of Performance, Rehearsing for Performance (double unit), Performing to an Audience and Dance Performance. We then offer specialist units which cover a wide range of dance styles as well as physical theatre, marketing/promoting, choreography, improvisation, body maintenance and more.

Academic Progression: 

After this course you can apply to universities and dance schools furthering your training in specialist dance styles or performance studies. This qualification is fully recognised by higher education institutions.

Career Progression: 

After the course, if you want to get a job straight away you could work in entertainment, theatre, performance, dance administration and fitness industry.

Full Description: 

The units studied are Performance Workshop, Performing Arts Business,The Historical Context for Performance, Rehearsing and Performing, Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Singing, Contemporary, Choreography, Musical Theatre, The Healthy Performer and more.  

Assignments will be given by your tutors throughout the course and will take a wide variety of interesting and different formats.  Learning is also supported through access to the College library and learner resource centre and pastoral and financial support services. 

All tutors have specialist professional training and experience in the performing arts industry.  Our state of the art facilities include three purpose built dance studios located in the city centre.  Each studio is mirrored with a sprung floor, air conditioning and P.A system.  Our 200 seated theatre has an excellent lighting and sound system and rehearsal space. 

Annual departmental trips are organised.  Past trips have included New York, Italy, Paris and London.  Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related performance activities.  

To date students have performed at The Playhouse, Lava, London Palladium, Norfolk Dance Regional Platform, Bodyworks Community showcase and many more.

Past students have graduated onto vocational schools such as; Laban, Urdang, LIPA, Performers, Masters, BodyWorks, Stella Mann, E15 and universities including: Middlesex, Liverpool John Moores, Chichester, Surrey and Dartington.  Past students have also entered straight into employment including work in the fitness industry and as professional performers.
