Entry Requirements: 

Must be employed in a hairdressing salon and it will be a benefit to have achieved at least three GCE’s at Grade C or above.

Assessment: 

You will be continually assessed throughout the course by means of practical assessments and end of unit written or online tests and assignments which can be re-taken if necessary.  Practical assessments must be carried out on paying clients although you will be encouraged to bring in your own clients to help with this.  A reduction is made to the usual prices in this case.

There is a large amount of theory work involved on the hairdressing course, this includes assignments and projects as well as essays and research work. You will be expected to keep up with written work and submit it on time.  Students failing to do this will be expected to receive additional learning support, if their tutor feels that it will help.

Academic Progression: 

You can progress to NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing, or NVQ2 Beauty Therapy, or the Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-Up.

Career Progression: 

There are a wide variety of jobs for fully qualified hairdressers, including salon and spa work both in the UK and abroad.  Hairdressers also work in hotels, on cruise liners, in hospitals and health clubs.  With further experience, they can also become salon owners or follow careers in hair design for photography and fashion, teaching and training and work for manufacturers of hairdressing products as a technical advisor.

Full Description: 

The course is for those who wish to follow a career in the hairdressing industry.  Students will be employed in a hairdressing salon and will work towards achieving an NVQ Level 2 qualification in Hairdressing.  The course covers the following units:

Mandatory Units [all must be completed]
Unit G1    Ensure your own actions reduce risks to Health & Safety
Unit G5    Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organization
Unit G7    Advise and consult with clients
Unit H9    Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
Unit H6    Cut hair using basic techniques
Unit H10  Style, dress and finish hair using basic techniques
Unit H13  Change hair colour using basic techniques

Plus 2 of the Optional Units:
Unit G4    Fulfil salon reception duties
Unit G6    Promote additional products or services
Unit G8    Develop and maintain  your effectiveness at work
Unit H11  Style hair using basic plaitting techniques with added hair
Unit H12  Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques
