This course is designed to develop a wide range of musicianship and academic skills and provide students with skills that will enable them to gain employment in the music industry, both locally, nationally, now and in the future.
We ask for five GCSEs at Grade C or above and these should ideally include English and Maths. Also, applicants must demonstrate a reasonable degree of musical literacy, equivalent to ABRSM or LLCM Grade IV Theory and performance, GCSE Music at Grade C or above or mostly distinctions in First Diploma Music. Students will be required to attend an audition, at which they will be asked to demonstrate their ability to respond to a range of musical tasks. We may enrol students if they do not satisfy the entrance requirements set out above, providing they can demonstrate through other studies and/or experience that they are capable of coping with and benefiting from the programme.
Students will take units in Performance, Improvisation, Jazz Improvization, Songwriting, Composing, Sound Recording, Sequencing, Marketing and Promotion, Concert Production and Staging, Sound and Music for Film, Working as a Musical Ensemble, The Sound and Music Industry, Music and Society, Music Theory and Harmony, Music in the Community, Listening Skills for Music Technologists, Aural Pereption Skills and take part in staging a Major Music Project.
The vast majority of assessment is coursework based, either through recordings, performances, essays or similar written assignments. Performances take place throughout the year at City College Norwich or in a range of venues around the city, recent venues have included The Marquee, Bedfords, Take 5, The Brickmakers, Ten Bells, Epic, The Forum, Norwich Arts Centre, The Playhouse and Hog in Armour.
Successful completion of this course serves as a progression route to higher education in Music or related course. Recent students have gone on to Leeds College of Music, Goldsmiths, Derby University, BIMM, Huddersfield University, Southampton University, Keel University, UEA, and HE course at City College Norwich
This course provides a great preparation for a career in the music industry and is design to enable students to gain useful paid employment in performance, recording, music management, and teaching. Students will work with industy-based tutors, all of whom earn through well established musical careers.
This course is designed to develop a wide range of musicianship and academic skills and provide students with skills that will enable them to gain employment in the music industry, both locally, nationally, now and in the future. The course provides a great preparation for those wishing to live a musical life, keen to establish a career in the music industry or progress into higher education courses in music, music technology and music management. The course is geared towards popular music styles such as rock, pop, jazz and metal.
The Extended Diploma students will use industry standard Mac G5 computers running Logic 9 for recording, sequencing and film units in recording in our well specs live room, again using industry standard equipment. Students will take part in practical sessions held at Norwich's excellent Plug Studios, where each room has a full drum kit, two guitar amps, bass and PA.
