This course is designed for teachers and trainers who want to extend their professional understanding of Adult and Further Education. The course normally lasts three years but the honours dissertation module can be taken in parallel with year two modules, enabling participants to complete the course in two years.
You must have a Certificate in Education and a minimum of three years' teaching experience.
Assessment is by assignment and the honours dissertation. There is no final examination.
You may wish to progress to the MA in Learning and Teaching also offered within the Faculty for Higher Education.
This course offers a professional, accredited 'refresher course' for qualified and experienced teachers and trainers who may wish to re-acquaint themselves with educational theory and to study new developments.
Course Outline
Year one
- Module one: Theories of learning (30 credits Level two)
- Module two: Educational research methods (30 credits Level two)
Year two
- Module three: Management issues in postcompulsory education (30 credits Level three)
- Module four: Social perspectives on education (30 credits Level three) Year three (or alongside Year two)
- Module five: Dissertation (60 credits Level three)
Methods of Teaching and Learning
A wide range of teaching methods and learning approaches are used throughout the course; lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, presentations and practical exercises. Participants are encouraged to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning, with appropriate support from module tutors.
