Art AS and A Level

Summary: 

What will you learn on this course?

  • To express yourself creatively.
  • To research the work of other artists.
  • To develop and explore a range of skills and techniques.
  • To critically analyse both the student's own work and the work of other artists.
  • To investigate and respond to real art work, eg Gallery visits.
  • To develop students own ideas producing a body of work including sketchbooks.
Course Length: 
One year for AS and two years for a full A Level
Entry Requirements: 

At least five GCSE passes at grade A*-C including Art. Students without an A*-C in Art may be admitted with a suitable portfolio of previous work instead.

Full Description: 

How will you be assessed?
There will be a process of continuous assessment of course work culminating with a practical exam.

Unit 1 AS - A portfolio of coursework and supporting studies.

September to March of Year 1.

Unit 2 AS - An externally set assignment.

Two day practical exam in May of Year 1.

Unit 3 A2 - Coursework unit, comprising

  1. Practical Work
  2. Personal Study (incl. written and illustrated essay of 1000 - 3000 words)

September to March of Year 2.

Unit 4 A2 - An externally set assignment, the final piece of work is developed over a 12 hour exam.  

Three day practical exam in May of Year 2.

What other courses go well with this one?
Textiles, photography and any other creative courses are useful if planning an application to Art School, but Art also balances well with all subjects to develop a creative approach to education.

What will you need to buy?
A kit of art equipment is important, eg, scissors, pencils, pastels, pens and other appropriate items.

What could you go on to do at the end of the course?

  • Degree courses in the Arts.
  • Careers in all areas of art, design and craft.
