Access to Teaching

Summary: 

This course has been designed specifically for people with a mature approach to learning who wish to enter teaching in either the primary,secondary or further education sector. It is designed for peole who do not have the formal qualifications such as A Levels.

Entry Requirements: 

In order to enter the teaching profession graduates have to have GCSE English, Maths and Science at grade C and above. To be eligible for the access to teaching course you have to have at least two of these GCSE's at grade C or above. There is the opportunity to study the third GCSE along side your Access programme.

Selection is by formal interview along with diagnostic assessments. For acceptance onto the programme you will need to convince us that you have the determination and skills to succeed and will be able to cope with the workload of a full time fast track level three course. It should be appreciated that the course is as rigorous and demanding as an A Level course.  

Core Skills: 

The programme is made up of four core subjects: English, History, Science and Teaching & New tTechnology. Along side these core subjects you will take units in study skills which are specifically aimed at preparing you for study at H.E. You will also have the opportunity to study a subject area in depth via an independent dissertation. The course is primarily classroom based but lecturers use a variety of teaching methods in order to prepare students for degree level study.    

Assessment: 

The course is made up of a series of units with each unit being assessed independently. Assessment techniques range from formal essay writing to presentation skills. 

Academic Progression: 

This course is specifically aimed at students wishing to go into teaching. Direct progression routes from the Access course may include B.A. in Educational Studies or subject specific degrees. The course is excellent  preparation for the B.A in English and Psychology in Society which is delivered here at the college and is validated by the UEA. The course may also lead to acceptance onto The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning sector  for applicants with a vocational background. The Access qualification  is widely recognised by Higher Education institutions
