Access to College Year 1 (B) is for learners with significant learning difficulties and/or disabilities who need a high level of support. Group sizes are small, 8-12.
Most learners come directly from school but some may come to the course having sampled other provision available. The programme is flexible and can be adapted to individual needs.

The main focus of the Access to College Year 1 (B) course is to give individuals skills for life; to help with developing personal, social and vocational goals. The course supports individuals with the transition between school, further education and adult life.
Learners will:
- Work towards specific individual targets
- Develop communication skills
- Improve self awareness and personal skills
- Experience different situations such as meeting new people
- Work towards independent travel
- Gain basic skills for adult life
- Increase levels of Literacy and Numeracy where appropriate
- Carry out the City & Guilds NPTC Entry Level Life Skills Award
(A short residential experience, with a high ratio of support, may be included as part of the course).
