Access to College Year 1 (A) is aimed at young people who will need support in making the transition from school. The course will develop independent living skills and basic skills. Classes are in groups of 10 to 12.

Students can progress to Access to College - Year 2 or Progressions.
The focus of Access to College Year 1 (A) is to provide an effective transition from a school environment into college. It will enable students to take greater responsibility for and make effective choices about their own lives by:
- Improving basic skills
- Promoting self reliance and self confidence
- Providing students with the opportunity to mature in an FE setting
- Improving personal skills as appropriate
- Working on independent travel skills
- Working on Life Skills
- Residential experience
- Increasing levels of Literacy and Numeracy
