Dick Palmer, Principal City College NorwichHi to all, my name's Dick Palmer and I'm the Principal of City College Norwich - one of the very best FE and HE colleges in the country. This Blog is my space to let you know about things going on in the College, in Norwich and in the wider educational community. As always, I welcome your comments so please let me know what you think.

Meeting HRH the Queen in Buckingham Palace

What a fantastic 24 hours! 5 students and 5 of us staff (including the Chairman of Governors) have just spent the morning at Buckingham Palace with HRH Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and Princess Anne, receiving a Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. It was a full "honours" ceremony and a wonderfully relaxed and dignified affair. Our students, all of whom have Aspergers, were extremely excited to meet the Royal Family and they behaved impecably, showing exactly the right sort of decorum befitting the role as ambassadors for Further Education.

Another successful OFSTED

We have had another successful OFSTED with Science and Maths regraded and significant progress made in two out of three areas. My thanks to the students and staff who made the visit so constrcutive.

A busy period

It has been a very busy period since the start of the new term and the wintry conditions have even affected my capacity to keep up to date with this blog! OFSTED are back in again today and tomorrow looking at our Science and Maths provision. Two female students have won their places in the British Colleges National Hockey Team. We've got two key new members of staff in Lesley Shepperson (Head of CPD) and Ruth Luckett (Policy Advisor to me, the Principal).

EMA is safe for the short term.....

Schools Minister Iain Wright relieved the fears of many this week by confirming that the Education Maintenance Allowance would be continued after the school leaving age is raised to 18. MPs are meeting in Westminster this week to discuss the future for EMA payments. It is four years since the scheme was first introduced; during which time it has not been without controversy or criticism.

HE Funding Cuts

The government has made much of the need to aim higher, introducing a target of 50pc of people going into higher education. The justification has always been that Britain needs better educated employees with higher skill levels, in order to trade blows with our rival nations on an increasingly competitive world stage.

Another year another....

The start of the last academic year was not pleasant for most due to the EMA debacle. Millions of students up and down the country were affected along with their families as a result of incompetence by the administering organisation Liberata. This was not a pleasant time it eventually lead to some students having to quit courses as they could not afford to come. This was fortunately not the case at City College; although our students were affected, luckily the College went the extra mile by loaning students the money they were not receiving.

Sticking with PowerPoint

Continuing the theme of PowerPoint, I came across another exemplar show with drag and drop capability, which is possibly more flexible for working with images or text. The downside is that the way it works is slightly different to the standard technique, in that you have to click and let go to pick up the object to move, but I think that's a small price to pay.
